Workforce Housing
There is a significant shortage of affordable workforce housing for employees in all the community services fields. Teachers, educational services workers (bus drivers, cafeteria and custodial staff), university faculty and students, emergency services workers and volunteers, healthcare, public safety, and human services workers are all vital to sustaining a healthy community. They are finding it increasingly difficult to live in local communities and near their work place. This is making it difficult to fill jobs and may decrease the quality of work as people commute longer distances, or employers are short of staff.
Libraries
Technology is placing new demands on the County library system, and changing the way libraries function and provide services. Libraries are providing many more types of media than in the past when they were primarily a source of books. Users may access library services over the internet or they may go to the library to use a computer.
Parks and Recreation
Funding for the development of community recreation facilities is limited. As the population grows and communities become denser, there is a need for more local parks and facilities for active recreation. Much of the county’s open space funding has been awarded for open space land acquisition. Growing communities also need funding for construction and maintenance of recreation facilities. These small local parks are an important component of the community facilities network. There are opportunities for municipalities and school districts to cooperate in providing or maintaining these facilities jointly.
